The AMMPA Scientist Membership category was created to recognize the work of scientists who are making significant research contributions working with Alliance-accredited organizations and promoting the well-being of marine mammals living in public display facilities and/or in the wild, and to enable them to join the Alliance.
Scientist Members commit to understanding and upholding the Alliance Code of Ethics and Alliance Standards and Guidelines in all applications of research they conduct both within and outside of Alliance member organizations, including field research.
Scientist Members will be represented on the members-only side of the AMMPA website as members committed to the AMMPA mission supporting research that benefits the health and well-being of marine mammals living in public display facilities throughout the world as well as those in the wild. Scientist Members may serve on and/or are eligible to be appointed to chair AMMPA committees. Scientist Members are eligible to attend the AMMPA Annual Meeting.
Scientist Members do not have voting rights and are not eligible to serve on the AMMPA Board of Directors. The Scientist membership is available by invitation only. Potential applicants may be nominated by an Alliance organizational member representative and must be approved by the Alliance Board of Directors and AMMPA Scientific Advisory Committee. Scientists must be able to demonstrate a history of supporting AMMPA member values and public display.
Once nominated, applicants must submit an application to AMMPA along with a letter of recommendation from a current AMMPA Organizational Member. Scientist dues are $100 annually. All applications must be approved by a majority vote of the AMMPA Board of Directors for final approval. Membership may be renewed each year or revoked by a majority vote of the AMMPA Board.
