Only zoological parks and aquariums may join the Alliance. The Alliance does not offer membership to individuals. Research institutions studying marine mammals are also welcome. Professional and trade associations are invited to join the Alliance at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Membership is based on successful completion of the Alliance's accreditation process, which assures that an applicant meets the association's Standards and Guidelines.

To begin the process to join the Alliance, a facility must submit an extensive accreditation application along with two letters of recommendation from current Alliance members, who have visited the facility and can attest that the applicant meets Alliance standards. Following submission and review of the accreditation application, the applicant must make a presentation before the full membership at the association's annual meeting. The presentation must describe in detail the facility and its amenities; all marine mammal programs; education, training, husbandry, and veterinary care programs; food preparation; research activities; and the a history on each marine mammla animal at the facility. Also, a team of experts will do an on-site inspection and evaluation to ensure full compliance with Alliance standards.

Any park, aquarium, or research facility considering membership in the Alliance may attend one annual meeting at the invitation of a member facility prior to joining.
